In 2019, when I made my first Discord account, I chose the name Toast Best. 'Toast' came from my diet at the time; I ate a lot of toast because it was cheap, versatile, and we were poor. Living on the South Side of Chicago, I faced violence, poverty, and systemic racism. 'Best' is my real last name, adding a touch of irony to the struggle. Art became my escape and voice in these tough times. My work, inspired by underground rap and hood irony, is a mix of my experiences. Using ink, graphite, paint, and color pencil, I dive into themes of mental health, violence, racial identity, and poverty. My art tells a story of survival and expression, reflecting the world I grew up in. Music and fashion also influence my creations, shaping my style and perspective. Toast Best isn't just a name; it's about turning adversity into art and finding beauty and identity in the struggle.
